Come to think of it, this fascination with Harley-Davidson hunks of metal all started more than ten years ago, back in 1992. I was a young freelance reporter for a weekly newspaper. It was in October, during my second year of journalism at a community college. The editor asked me to write a story about the local HOG chapter, at a time when rival 1%ers clubs where playing with pretty large firecrackers...
Going to the HOG's monthly meeting, I was in awe in the parking lot, my jaw on the asphalt.
It didn't take long to figure out that, one day, I'd be straddling one of these machines... "Next summer, perhaps?" But I landed a job as editor-in-chief of a brand new weekly, in Rockland, Ontario. Working for a start-up meant very long hours and very little pay... I had to wait, while covering toy runs with envy... By 1996, I had enough of said long hours and low pay, and I went back to school, to the University of Ottawa, to finish an undergraduate degree in History. Two and a half years of strong efforts, two and a half years of waiting for the Harley. But I worked too hard at U of O: my grades were good enough that I was accepted at Carleton University to their Master of Journalism program. At Canada's top journalism school. I graduated with an MJ in the Fall of 2001. My present to myself? A Harley-Davidson Sportster. But, darn, I'm still waiting...
